Here are a few examples of important uses of more frequently used prepositions:
1.
Above=higher than; over (above can be used only when there is no contact)
The birds
were flying above the trees.(no
contact between birds
and trees)

Across=from one to the other (of)
The new

river.

After=later than; next; following in time and order
